On December 17, ISET and three other Georgian universities signed a memorandum of understanding to create a USAID-proposed Center of Excellence in Energy.  The Center is a joint project of four Georgian institutions, including ISET, Georgian Technical University, Akaki Tsereteli Kutaisi State University, Grigol Robakidze University and several energy companies working in Georgia.

The Center of Excellence in Energy is a project of USAID's Energy Capacity Initiative. Through the Energy Capacity Initiative's Higher Education Grant Program, USAID provides support to higher education institutions to develop sustainable graduate-level energy education programs that meet the current and future needs of Georgia's energy sector. The center will support education, applied research and training in the energy sector.

As USAID Energy and Environment Office Director John Hansen explained, through the center, USAID "will help Georgian students know more about the energy sector and use this knowledge for the development of their country."

Following the signing ceremony, participants of the Center of Excellence left for Gudauri, Georgia to work out and adopt strategies of the consortium.
