Public Seminar: “Reshaping Economic Geography”

On October 22, 2009 ISET hosted a public seminar by Chorching Goh, senior economist in Europe and Central Asia region of the World Bank. In her seminar, Goh discussed the findings and the messages of the World Bank's annual flagship report Reshaping Economic Geography.
The main message of Chorching Goh's presentation was that growth is spatially uneven, as this is the nature of rapid growth. However, development can still be inclusive. Through economic integration, inclusive development can be achieved, even where growth is uneven. Traditionally, government policies have focused mainly on those regions or areas which lag behind others or are not doing well, but such targeted interventions are only a few of the integration policy instruments that could be used. As Goh explained, creation of common institutions that unify and connective infrastructure that link different areas with one another may be more effective as policy instruments.
The presentation was followed by a discussion about the implications of the Report's findings for Georgia and the region.
